What TechSmith Capture is for

TechSmith Capture is a free app from TechSmith Corporation, the maker of Camtasia and Snagit. Its App Store listing says you can share directly from your mobile device to Camtasia for editing, and transfer videos to Camtasia and Snagit over a WiFi connection.

TechSmith's tutorial describes the flow: sign in with a TechSmith account, tap the record button, optionally turn on the microphone, and choose Start Broadcasting. When you stop, you can preview, delete or share the recording. You can also import videos from Photos into the Capture library.

To move a video to a computer, you start the connection in Capture, choose File and then Connect Mobile Device in Camtasia or Snagit, and scan a QR code. Both devices must be on the same network. The recording then lands on the Camtasia timeline or in the Snagit Editor.

The listing says TechSmith Capture is currently offered as a free preview. It shows no paid items, needs iOS 14.5 or later, and its latest version, 1.7, is dated November 10, 2021 with the note Bug fixes. Neither TechSmith page describes live streaming, a watermark or a time limit.

Where TechSmith Capture may suit you better

  • You edit in Camtasia or Snagit on a computer and want the recording there with a QR code scan, straight onto the Camtasia timeline or into the Snagit Editor.
  • You want to blur personal information, add arrows, captions or quizzes, or make a GIF, which TechSmith's tutorial describes doing in Camtasia or Snagit after the transfer.
  • You already have a TechSmith account and want only a recorder, with no social features, chat or streaming.
  • Your device is on iOS 14.5, which the listing supports; EveryCord needs iOS 15 or later.
